Martin Atkin

Communications consultant

Martin has worked for some of the world’s best-known media and non-profit organisations. He was a journalist and producer at the BBC, ITN and Sky News before leading global communications at Greenpeace, WWF and Fairtrade. He has lived and worked in Belgium, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Germany, and his reporting assignments cover five continents – quite a journey from his first ‘proper’ job, selling toy crocodiles from a kiosk at Bristol Zoo.

A news reporter at heart, Martin likes to get straight to the point: what’s new, what’s surprising, and why does it matter? His recipe for a good story: “Tell me something I haven’t heard before; show me something I haven’t seen before; take me somewhere I haven’t been before.”

Outside work, Martin loves nothing better than walking his three dogs and riding around the UK and Europe on his Triumph Tiger motorbike (though not at the same time). He also volunteers as a Blood Bike courier and as a mental health first aider with the Mental Health Motorbike charity.

Special Power
Stripping away jargon and bullshit to get to the heart of the story.
What makes him happy
Walking the dogs through the early morning summer mist on the common near our house. Sharing a bottle of wine with my wife and daughters. The joy of waking up in a city I’ve never visited before, with all the unexplored promise it holds. Standing on the terraces at Portman Road, the home of my beloved Ipswich Town, watching them win (or lose) again. Oh, and sending in my invoice after a job well done.
In his own words
I never forget that communications are a means to an end. Campaigns are just noise unless they result in a positive impact. Raising awareness in itself isn’t enough - it should mark the start of a journey to action.
